Workers Rights Advocate:

10-month commitment, 5 to 10 hours a week

WJP Workers Rights Advocates recover unpaid wages of Latino/a immigrants when they are not paid minimum wage, overtime, or not paid at all. Advocates accomplish this through working directly with workers and negotiating with employers and collaborating with local and state agencies. Advocate will receive training from WJP staff to recover unpaid wages. Advocates must be detail oriented, responsible, and self-motivated, have basic computer skills and be fluent in both Spanish and English.

Day Labor Organizer:

6-month commitment, 3 to 5 hours a week

Day Labor Organizers work closely with WJP’s Community Organizer to support NYC’s day laborers to defend their labor and civil rights. Organizers learn about basic community organizing skills, popular education philosophy, and worker rights protections. They make weekly visits to a day laborer hiring site in Brooklyn and Queens to hand out information about workers and civil rights, hold educational talks about labor concerns, or help administer surveys. Organizers support worker leaders to organize to raise wages or address community concerns at their corner. Organizers must be reliable, friendly, organized and they must be fluent in Spanish and must be available one morning a week, between 7:30-9:30am (approx), although the day of the week is flexible. Organizers check in regularly with WJP staff and write brief updates about their hiring site.

Fundraising Committee & Special Events:

WJP volunteer fundraisers work closely with the Project Director to expand our donor base and help carryout fundraising events.  Volunteer fundraisers are essential to our work and ensure that we be able to continue struggling for racial and economic justice. Fundraising volunteers learn about grassroots fundraising and building a sustainable organization.
